Pomelo Smoothie Bowl

So I was at Whole Foods with the twins, and in my usual #twinmom state (tired, fuzzy brain) I had found myself wandering the store, having immediately forgotten what it was that I needed to get. I was distracted by a display of giant pomelos, and on a whim, I purchased one about half the size of a basketball.

Once I got home, I realized I had no idea what to do with it. What looked so cool and enticing in the store now seemed like a frivolous buy. I'm not a grapefruit person; eating a plain grapefruit sounds like a punishment to me. I decided to mix it into a smoothie since I love my smoothies, which then morphed into making a smoothie bowl, and THEN I had the genius idea of making the pomelo skin into a bowl, which to my surprise actually worked! Also, it looked neat and I felt like a creative genius though I'm absolutely sure someone else has thought of this idea at some point.

It took a lot of taste tasting until the sweetness perfectly balanced the tartness, but finally I achieved it. This is actually suuper refreshing, and after a quick online barre workout while the babies napped (at the same time! It was glorious!) I immensely enjoyed this smoothie bowl. Pomelo Smoothie Bowl

serves 1-2


1-1/2 frozen bananas

1/2 cup frozen mango

1/2 cup fresh pomelo

1 tablespoon reserved pomelo juice

1 piece fresh ginger (about 1 tablespoon)

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

optional for a sweeter/meal replacement:

1 scoop vegan vanilla protein powder


1. In a food processor or high-powered blender, puree all ingredients. Add a little more pomelo juice if needed until desired texture is reached.

2. Serve in rind of pomelo as a "bowl" or a regular bowl, and sprinkle with additional cinnamon and freshly grated pomelo rind.
